Due Monday, Sept 12 - NEVER MIND - on Monday we will be going to library to set up our Net ID accounts with UConn. On Wed. we will have read "Awakening Genius." After reading this article, go back to summer reading book and answer this question "What did you learn about the ocean from this book? We will have a discussion based on the article and your answers to these questions on Fri.

Wed - I will be up at UConn attending a conference in Maritime Studies. You all should work on your research papers, try to find documents that will help you to write this essay. One document must be from the UConn Database. You may also begin reading Ishmael as you will need to be on page 63 by Friday.

Fri - We will dedicate this day to discussion. 1. Summer Reading 2. "Awakening Genius" 3. Ishmael 4. your topics for research and the process you will be going through to write this essay.

Tue 21.- Find Dan Quinn's article "Schooling: The Hidden Agenda" on line and read. If you can not print it out, see me Monday for a copy. Read up to p. 110 in Ishmael.
Thur - rough draft of your research essay.

Thur. 23rd- Writing Workshop on research essay. You should have at least 3 sources, 1 from UConn databases
Mon. 26th - page 184 of Ishmael - end discussion. Also read "Coming to Terms" by Harris, and begin applying his ideas to your writing.

Friday, the 30th - 2nd draft of research essay due. Should be in pretty good shape at this point. I should see all of Harris except "Taking an Approach." If you have gotten there on your own, three cheers. If not, do not worry. We will finish watching JAWS, reading the movie through our new Maritime perspective, People and Boundaries. Where are they in the movie, why do they exist and who created them?
For Tues. Oct. 4th, please read Intro and background information on my delicious site for The Odyssey. Please prepare Book 9 for Tuesday. I need your field trip permission slips and $20 for Seaport membership.

Thursday , the 6th, we will be going to the seaport.
In class, I will give you the "museum" assignment and we will discuss where to best post our information.
Research/Inquiry essays are due Oct. 12
Presentations to class on Oct 14th. Sorry had to push this up because I will not be in class tomorrow.
You will be going to the computer lab to put your "museum" items (2) on the wiki, then adding the back story. I expect this to be complete by next Tuesday the 18th.
Odyssey Book 10 and 11 due Oct. 12. Read actively. You will need quotes from the text on the 12th.
For Tuesday, the 18th, Book X, XI and XII.
Thursday- we will continue to work on charts of Odysseus's journey. Read the beginning of Book 13 as Odysseus is sent on his journey back to Ithaka. Make sure you have a log or explanation of moral compass. Link to assignment - The Trials and Triumphs of Odysseus
Monday the 24th - charts are due
Wed, 26th, we will be discussing Longitude, please read up to p. 33
Friday the 28th - rewrites of research essays due
Nov. 1-3 - We will be "reading" Longitude," the movie, as a text for Coming to Terms. Take copious notes. Ask a million questions. Capture some quotes. Guess what our next job will be once we come to terms???
Read The Perfect Storm p.80.
p. 212 for Tuesday the 15th.
Finish Perfect Storm by 21st.
FIELD TRIP PERMISSIONS SLIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make sure you bring a camera so you can take pictures of two more items to add to our Maritime museum.
Think about how you are going to write this next essay.Odyssey, Longitude, Perfect Storm, navigation, and finally White Squall.
Begin a draft - I would like to see that you are playing with ideas by Wed. Nov. 30th. Make sure you have "come to terms" with Longitude and Perfect Storm in your logs. Library time for research and writing on Wed. and Friday
Tuesday Dec. 6th - Essay due on Navigation unit.
Monday the 12tth - Final drafts due.
Read L'Olonnais for class.

For Friday the 16th - Just read Chap. 2 "Going to Sea." We will use class time to come up with our quadrant lessson

December Break : Pirate Lattitudes - Enjoy!

January - Student presentations of chapters from The Republic of Pirates.
Mid term exam will be a "Taking an Approach" essay on our pirate presentations and Pirate Latitudes.
